Japanese swordfighting

This was back in the summer of 08. I put it here because of the interest in blocking. It also shows some of the entries we use when fighting. The swords are real, but they are habiki (tempered swords, but unsharpened) they behave like the real thing. Even though I say they are unsharpened, they are far sharper than what most folks have in their kitchen, so there is considerable risk here. Cameron's sword was bent in the exercise, an indicator that his block was not timed well enough to the blow he was deflecting. Please notice the foot work; it follows the basic value of moving the body out of the way and preparing for the next action. Kumitachi is an old practice, it has many forms. By tradition, the elder or teacher always looses in these exercises. There is more to it than that, it is just I have limited space for explanation. Bent swords were a reality of combat. Exercises like this allow only a glimpse. Do not attempt this without proper guidance, cheap swords break, as well as other hazards.

I should add that Cameron exhibited excellent control of the blade each time. His distancing was spot on and he literally had my life in his hands. A good indicator of his level of training.
